First Look: New Alienware Area-51m Notebook
I've seen the future of notebooks, and Alienware is leading the way.
By Robert Heron
Alienware's new Area-51m gaming notebook is amazingly far ahead of the competition.
A first for notebooks
Making its debut at this year's E3, the new Area-51m is the first notebook I've seen that offers user-upgradable graphics. Want to have the first notebook with Nvidia's new DirectX 9 mobile graphics chip? Maybe you'd prefer ATI's new Radeon Mobility 9600? Alienware has both, and they start at 128MB.
And that's not the best part. You can remove a couple of screws from the bottom of the notebook and drop in ATI's or Nvidia's latest mobile graphics chip, just as you would with a PC. We've been hearing about a common graphics interface for notebooks for years. Alienware has delivered.
More power please!
Alienware claims it has shaved nearly a pound from its desktop-replacement design while equipping the new Area-51 with the latest Intel processors using an 800-MHz front-side bus (FSB). The notebook ships in mid-July with up to 2GB of dual-channel 333-MHz DDR memory, but Alienware will quickly move 400-MHz DDR as it becomes available.
Display-wise
The new Area-51m can be configured with a high-resolution wide-screen format display or a standard 4:3 aspect ratio LCD. An included infrared remote provides wireless multimedia control as well as full mouse support.
Beefed-up audio
Also a first for notebooks is a four-speaker system (2x stereo). Alienware claims that it's a vast improvement over previous Area-51m designs. It'll also offer a subwoofer as an option after launch. How much longer until we have integrated 5.1? I'm not sure how useful 5.1 in a notebook would be, but it sounds impressive (pun intended).
...
Upgradable graphics, drives, and memory are all available in the new Area-51m. Heck, you can pay to ship it back to Alienware and it'll paint it a new color and upgrade it any way you want -- at cost!
Stay tuned for more details about the new Area-51m as well as information about its new Centrino-based design.
