iBook update any day now
July 19, 2005 - Sources have confirmed that Apple's consumer laptop will receive a long overdue refresh very soon, possibly as early as this week -- or later today.
Details of the updated iBook are unknown, as is a firm release date. However, unconfirmed tips indicate that a long-rumored widescreen iBook may finally come to light with the new iBook.
In April, DigiTimes reported that laptop manufacturer Quanta had landed a contract to manufacture 14.1-inch widescreen iBooks. The publication added that fellow manufacturer Asustek had snagged a deal to produce 15.4-inch widescreen iBooks in 2006. While the site's track record for predicting future Apple products has historically been spotty at best, buzz that Apple has been kicking around a widescreen iBook has routinely surfaced ever since Apple made its mark as the first computer maker to go the widescreen route with the PowerBook G4.
Apple last revised the iBook in October 2004. Since that time, the company bumped the PowerBook G4 in February 2005, paving the way for an iBook revision that would cannibalize sales of PowerBooks less.
Why the long wait between iBook updates? Given that the faster processors and video cards that will find their way into a new iBook have surely been available for some time, the most logical reason may center upon an all-new iBook enclosure, something that would add credence to the widescreen iBook buzz.
Of course, logic is often a poor indicator for pegging future Apple products, and with only the new iBook's nearing release confirmed, much about the updated consumer laptop remains shrouded in mystery.
