"A rather simple fix is this:
Download and Install "OnyX"
Run OnyX, and choose "Parameters", then click on the Finder Tab.
Click "Show Hidden Files/Folders"
Then simply go into the main level of your Hard Drive, and you'll now see:
.Spotlight-V100
Trash it... (you must be an admin to do this)
Restart, allow a bit of time for Spotlight to reindex your drive.
Now your "searching" in Leopard Mail will work once again.

Lastly, go back into OnyX, and unclick "show hidden files/folders".
Done."

I have had the same problem for some time - and a lot of problems with Mail.app and sluggish performance with imap and Exchange. Along with a whole lot of other problems, I consider Leopard to be the worst launch Apple has made since 10.1.
Anyway, I was able to get searching working again using a combination of methods described here. Some steps might not be necessary, but I'll add them anyway since I can't know for sure what worked.
1. I opened Font Book and resolved all duplicates. OS X has had increased problems connected to the fonts over the years. This is a starting point for most problem solving methods.
2. I used Onyx to initiate a complete rebuild of Spotlight's index and Mail's envelope index.
3. Looking at the article above (
http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cach...ed+out&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us&client=safari), I took some parts of what they found: I opened the Console and filtered out entries with "mdworker" and found too much. So I decided to only look for additional font problems, filtering Console entries for font related problems. As described in the article, I deleted them. After trying to rebuild the index as described in the article, my problems actually increased for a while.
4. So finally, I used Onyx once more to initiate a complete rebuild of Spotlight's index and Mail's envelope index. After the process had ended, I searched for mail information outside of the Mail app, using Spotlight in the finder. It took forever (yes, the indexing was over and it still took forever as if indexing somehow was done based on the search criteria) – but it worked.
5. Opening mail, I can search for everything again. Even complete content.
Thanks to the company Technology Consulting who spent time getting closer to the problem. Their solution did not help me entirely, but without their efforts I would never have gotten this far!
