Finally, I found some time to work iCab for the Mac again. The last year I was very busy in developing Apps for iPhone/iPad, so the Mac had to stand back.
Here are two new beta versions for iCab for the Mac...
The reason why there are two new version is that the new XCode-IDEs from Apple do no longer include frameworks for MacOSX 10.4 or support PowerPC, so it gets complicated to support older MacOSX releases as well.
The version 4.9 is meant for all users which still use MacOSX 10.4 (or 10.3.9 as well, though 10.3.9 is not recommended because the WebKit that is part of 19.3.9 is too old and buggy for many modern web pages). This is a pure bugfix release and includes no new features.
Version 5.0 requires at least MacOSX 10.5 (Leopard) and also includes new features.
New in iCab 5.0 (Beta 100)
- New button in the status bar to make the browser window transparent. Can be useful especially on smaller screens when you need to keep an eye on some other program in the background. Now you can place the iCab window on top of the other program and look "through" the iCab window while still be able to browser in the internet.
- When saving/modifying the bookmarks, iCab will now create backups even if the WebDAV syncing feature is disabled. And iCab keeps up to 5 backups of the bookmarks.
- In the browser window the "Find" command (Cmd-F) will now open a search bar within the window itself. The search results will be all shown in a lighter color.
- The "Modules" feature from the iPhone/iPad version of iCab is now also available in iCab for the Mac. The Modules Manager is accessible from within the "Tools" menu, here you can enabled/disable/reorder the modules and you can configure the modules, when necessary. Also you can install new modules (for example if you wrote your own) by just dragging the modules file into the modules list of the module manager window.
The modules itself can be opened from within the status bar of the browser window, where a new "puzzle piece" icon holds all the active modules. From here you can also open the modules manger window.
Unlike the iPhone/iPad version where Apple doesn't allow to download and install modules directly from the internet, the Mac Version can do this. So users can write their own modules and offer these to other users on their web pages. Sharing modules is therefore easy.
Technically modules are pure JavaScript code with some additions for the settings. You'll find a description of the Modules API in my iCab Blog.
The "Readability" Module is a module which is similar to the "Reader" feature of Safari 5, it's from the developers from who Apple has "borrowed" this feature for Safari. Several of the Modules do make it easier to post web pages to various social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Pinboard etc). Users of iCab Mobile might know many of them already.
Man nehme AdBlock for Safari und schon ist der Keks gegessen.… aber dieses Werbeblingbling ging mir sowas von auf den Keks.
