Als bei ihm 2014 Mundrachenkrebs diagnostiziert wurde, machte Ryūichi Sakamoto krankheitsbedingt Pause.
2017 enstand dann, nach Besserung seines Zustandes, folgendes gutes Album: "async".

Es enstand ein Album, bei dem er alle Richtungen und Konventionen fallen liess und lassen konnte.
Der Opener, der erste Titel: The only track made before Sakamoto's cancer diagnosis that appears on async is "andata." –
und der sitzt in seiner Wirkung fundamental krass.
