The digital music download war is heating up, and Roxio, (Nasdaq: ROXI - News) is the focus. It appears that RealNetworks (Nasdaq: RNWK - News), with $300 million in cash at the end of June, said it will use the new proceeds from convertible bonds for general corporate purposes, as well as acquisitions. Their target company is Roxio, Inc. RealNetworks has the largest online subscriber base for video and audio content and hopes to use Roxio’s Napster property and CD burning technology to leapfrog Apple’s iTunes service.
We reported that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL - News) is negotiating a buyout with Roxio to acquire their CD and DVD burning technology for Windows. A Roxio buyout would not only help Apple make major advances in the Windows world and bring a Windows version of iTunes to market sooner, but also eliminate a thorn in Apple’s side.
On July 28th and 29th, New York City will be the host to the 8th Annual Jupiter Plug.IN Conference & Expo. Peter Lowe, Apple's Director of Marketing for Applications and Services, will be a keynote speaker at the “digital business music event.” In addition to Lowe, other keynoters will include: Larry Kenswil, president, Universal Music Group, eLabs; and Chris Gorog, president and CEO of Roxio Inc.
It appears Roxio will be acquired on or before this event for approximately $11 per share.
