Der iMac ist soooo langsam, ich drehe durch - ich finde das Problem nicht.

Alles braucht unendlich lange: libre office oder scribus öffnen: gerne mal 15-30 Minuten.
Immer nur Eieruhr.
Aktivitätenanzeige zeigt nichts Ungewöhnliches.
Jetzt habe ich AppCleaner installiert, aber auch das zeigt nur eine Eieruhr, wenn ich da was reinziehe.
Vorher habe ich schon KnockKnock laufen lassen, aber auch nichts Ungewöhnliches gesehen.
Ich bin sicher, dass ich das problem nicht erkenne, weil ich nicht fit genug in so was bin.
Mag mir jemand helfen?
Ich muss diesen Text sogar auf meinem (leider) Windows-Laptop von der Arbeit schreiben, weil das auf dem iMac nicht mehr geht.

Könnte eine defekte Festplatte oder Festplattenkabel sein.
Lade dir etrecheck, das zeigt dir dann die installierten Erweiterungen an, eventuell findet man da einen der üblichen Verdächtigen: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck und die Helfer hier im Forum erhalten die meisten wichtigen Informationen über Rechner, System installierte Software, Helferlein und was sich sonst so an wichtigen Daten nur mühsam übers Nachfragen ergibt.

Schon ... aber der Threadstarter spricht von 15-30 MINUTEN. Sowas schafft nicht mal Mutterns iMac von 2007.

Bei dem 2011 von meiner Mutter war defekter RAM die Ursache für ewig lahmes alles
Mit neuem RAM und HDD läuft alles wie zu erwarten recht flott.

Ich kann mir trotzdem vorstellen, dass es an der Platte liegt. Ich kenne das Modell, das war schon unter 10.13 unbrauchbar langsam. Es hat eben keine Desktop-HDD sondern eine Notebook-HDD mit 5.400 rpm. Wenn man da mit der Zeit Catalina und jetzt vielleicht sogar noch Big Sur drüberbügelt (inklusive Umstellung auf AFPS zu einem früheren / jetzigen Zeitpunkt) kann ich mir das durchaus vorstellen.

Sowas schafft nicht mal Mutterns iMac von 2007.

Nochmal: 15-30 Minuten sind definitiv NICHT normal und auch nicht ohne Defekt zu erklären. Klar sind alte HDDs langsam, aber mein MBP 2011 braucht auch unter Sierra keine 15 Minuten, auch keine zehn, nicht einmal fünf Minuten für einfache Aufgaben.

Wenn er Catalina draufhat, dann ist die Platte mit APFS formatiert. Das wird dann in der Tat extrem langsam. Aber kann natürlich auch sein, dass die Platte zusätzlich noch einen Hau hat.

Ich tippe einfach mal auf eine defekte Festplatte. So eine olle HDD ist an sich schon lahm. Wenn die dann auch noch defekt ist, wird's echt ungemütlich. Defekter RAM ist zwar nicht auszuschließen, aber eher unwahrscheinlich. Bei wirklich defektem RAM ist der Rechner nicht langsam sondern nicht mehr benutzbar.

Wow, danke, dass Ihr Euch um mich kümmert. Habe gerade mal was gegessen und jetzt schon so viele Antworten. Toll.
sorry, antworten dauert natürlich auch ewig, weil ich es ja am iMac machen muss mit EtreCheck und so.
Eine Sache muss ich mal relativieren: wenn so ein Programm mal gestartet ist, dann dauert es nur noch so rund eine Minute bis was geht (speichern oder Seite umblättern). Manchmal geht es auch fast flüssig. Nicht normal, aber man kann FAST arbeiten.
Etrecheck lade ich gerade, dauert aber auch ewig. Das liefere ich nach.
In der Zwischenzeit habe ich ein tool DriveDX laufen lassen. Das sagt das, was im Anhang steckt. Also Festplatte ist ein guter Tipp.
ok, aber wo bekomme ich die fix her und vor allem: kann ich die selbst einbauen? Geht das einfach? Ich weiß nicht mal, wei der iMac aufgeht. Ist es dann nur stecken? Brauche ich einen Reparaturservice von Apple? Und: Mist, ab Mittwoch ist Lockdown. ich dreh durch.
Gut, ich nehme an, ich brauche 1 TB SSD. Und wenn ich schon mal dabei bin MEHR RAM. Wie viel ist sinnvoll? Bzw. was kann mein iMac denn? 16 oder gar 32? Lohnt überhaupt das Aufrüsten, oder muss ich einen neuen kaufen? Eigentlich habe ich gerade nicht so viel Geld. Würde meinen lieber noch behalten.

Vielen Dank. Tja, das ist das größte Problem. Ich wohne total auf dem Land. Es gibt keinen örtlichen Händler. Der nächste ist eine Stunde entfernt. Da werde ich wohl morgen mal hinfahren. Nützt ja nichts.

gibt es einen Grund warum Du TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 2.00 TB mit (Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
statt (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatiert hast?

Du hast viele 32-Bit-Applikationen als auch alte Applikationen installiert.
Hast Du das System immer per Backup migriert?
Z.B. Virtualbox 6.0.1 ist schon älter.

Ich würde auch mal überlegen ob die entsprechenden Apps 64-Bit sind ggf. über ein neu aufgesetztes sauberes System nachdenken.
