Im Apple forum hat jemand anscheinend eine lösung für das FIEP-Problem entdeckt.

Hi all,

Your dreams have come true. There is a cure for the whine that requires no programs to run and persists between reboots.

It requires the editing of one file. Please attempt this only if you understand what you are doing. I take no responsibility for your actions.

Here are the steps:

1. Find the file: -> System -> Library -> Extensions -> IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

2. Click the file and choose DUPLICATE from the File menu. Drag the copied file to somewhere safe.

3. Control click the original file to get: SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS

4. Double click CONTENTS

5. Double click PLUGINS

Delete everything except:

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext

&

Simple_PlatformPlugin.kext


6. Control click ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext and again SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS

7. Double click CONTENTS

8. Open the file: Info.plist with a text editor. I use Subethaedit.

9. Look for the following:

Make sure the MacBookPro1,1 is there at the end of the block. The block above represents the CPU throttling values. You'll notice that the integer values in the last block are 10 / 0 / 15 / 15

There are other similar blocks related to other machine types. The first block is for "M9ADP1,1". The MacBook Pro Block is the second big block.

The important line numbers are 129 and 131. So look there.


Change those to:

10. Double check things and then save the file.

11. Reboot to a no whine machine.

12. Enjoy.

With this method the only change is to the throttling matrix retaining all the code of the kernel extension relating to the MBP otherwise.

Naja, man fragt sich halt was dieser Crack bewirkt und ob dann nicht u.U. die CPU Leistung sinkt.

bin am überlegen... soll ich, soll ich nicht... trau mich nicht so recht, weil ich eben nicht genau weiß, was da passiert... vll funktioniert ähnlich wie quietmbp, beschäftigt also die cpu, dann kann ich aber gleich das laufen lassen...

hat jemand nähere informationen?

Ich hab's einfach mal probiert, System wieder einspielen kann man ja immer.

Resultat: fiept weiterhin, aber anders. m.E. etwas leiser bzw. in einem Frequenzbereich, den ich nicht so gut hören kann. Weg ist es aber nach wie vor nicht

ich wollte euch die meldung vom apple board nicht vorenthalten da ich mein mbp zurückgeschickt hab kann ichs selbst net testen

Interessant ist übrigens, dass die letzten Palm Organizer ein sehr ähnliches Problem haben. Auch mein Palm TX fiept. In Palmforen tummeln sich viele andere Betroffene. Die einzige Lösung des Problems ist auch hier die künstliche Taktverlangsamung der CPU. Nebenwirkungen wurden bisher keine berichtet.

Das testen sollte kein Problem sein. Normal sollte da nicht viel kaputt zu machen sein. Wenn doch: Archivieren und installieren oder die Originaldatei wiederherstellen im Target Mode (falls möglich).

Ich hätte da keine Skrupel das zu testen. Leider fehlt mir das MBP dazu (wenn jemand an dem Zustand was ändern will sagt mir Bescheid, Spenden werden gerne angenommen )

It seems like we've discovered how we could fix the whine, heating and the short battery life.

If you take a look at /var/log/System.log

You will find this line:

localhost configd[37]: com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DynamicPowerStep load failed

Yes, that's right. Intel SpeedStep is not implemented in Mac OS X.
It seems like Apple wanted to implement it, either the engineer in charge of it was screwed up or apple was hurrying to get macbook pro released...

This also explains why Macbook pro has a higher battery life, runs cooler without whine on a properly configured Windows XP (with updated intel drivers and microsoft hotfix). On Windows XP, when the system is Idle, CPU is throttled to 1GHz.

So we have two options:

1. Get Apple to implement it correctly - but so far it doesnt seem like apple is really concerned about this issue. Or rather, they don't seem to care.

2. Implement it ourselves - A guy called Cryptonome was trying to implement the proper power management for MacBook Pros on Mac OS X to solve these "CPU whine", heating and battery life problems, and he did have some fruitful results, but it seems like he's currently too busy or something to finish the implementation.

Unfortunately I am not a genius so I cannot implement anything like this... anyone?

What do you guys think?

I have heared from my local Apple service center that the problem is known by Apple and they expect Apple to come with a solution in about two weeks.

I will just wait for that before I start messing about in the system files myself...

Wie sicher ich denn die Datei nachdem ich sie überarbeitet hab? Irgendwie mag er die ned überschreiben

den hack gerade ausprobiert. die frequenz hat sich geändert, aber immer noch fies.
ich bleibe weiterhin bei programmen die die interne isight benutzen....

ich hoffe auch, dass apple demnächst noch etwas daran tun wird... würde auf jedenfall jede menge mbp besitzer frohen mutes stimmen.

Gerade selber ausprobiert, aber keine wesentliche Veränderung des 'fiepen' festgestellt

habe wieder meine alte IOPlatformFamily.kext laufen... war ja nicht wirklich der bringer für mich.

nb: wie wäre es mit quicktime broadcaster von apple selbst ? das proggie werf ich an um die isight anzumachen, und frisst dann während des gesamten zeitraums zwischen 2-4% CPU, was ich erträglicher finde als mit quietmbp.

As promised, I called Apple HQ in the US and asked for Steve Jobs. He only accepts faxes and regular snail mail.

So I was then re-directed to one of the Product Technical Managers for MacBook Pro.

The Whine: I was informed that I had a very powerful computer and that noise was simply electrical noise that is normal with any piece of electrical equipment. He told me it is nothing to worry about and that its very normal for a high powered machine to emit some form of noise, especially when in a thin metal case.

Heat: i was informd that page 107 of the MBP manual clearly states that the underside of the case can cause burns.

Mooing: He had not heard of that and suggested that maybe one of the Apple Engineers put it in as an 'Easter Egg' - (Easter Egg is a hidden surprise or joke).

So I thanked him for his time and actually he was very helpful and informative.

He also re-assured me that Apple are very proactive when technical issues arise and if there are ANY problems they will repair their products at their cost.

da fiepen mit den palms hat da nicht so sehr was mit der cpu zu tun, sondern mit der displaytechnik. ich gibt da eine spule welche die frequenz erzeugt und die sich nach einiger zeit wohl lockert und dann anfängt dieses hochfrequenzfiepsen zu machen. ich hatte das meinm tungsten und bei meinem tx jetzt auch immer mehr.

mit nem mpb warte ich noch bis das problem gelöst ist. bei meinem pb15 g4 habe ich dafür noch komisches elekronisches statisches rauschen aus den internen lautsprechern wenn die cpu arbeitet. auch ein klackern wenn ich scrolle etc. ist aber leise und es stört kaum, trotzdem sollte sowas bei einem gerät der 2000 euro klasse nicht vorkommen. aber dennoch rockt das pb mehr als alle windowsbuden zusammen..
