ROAM 1.6.1 Copies The ROM Into RAM To Potentially Help Accelerate Mac Performance

Friday, October 6, 2000

Press Release Edited By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

Steven Bytnar's ROAM copies the Mac's ROM into RAM, and then causes the ROM memory to be accessed from the RAM based copy instead of from the actual ROMDIMM. This has the potential of speeding up PowerMacintoshes that do not already map ROM into RAM.Machines. ROAM does not work on (or not well on): iMacs (comes with ROM in RAM functionality) Blue & White G3s (comes with ROM in RAM functionality) 6100/66 Macs. It is possible that they would benefit _IF_ the system bus speed was increased. It seems like the ROM DIMM is faster than RAM on these machines. 7200's. PowerPC upgraded 680x0 Macs. Your milage may vary.

Mr. Bytnar says that The ROAM Benchmark results are always changing. He is trying to make it more precise and plasn on eventually releasing the benchmarking code publicly. In other words, if ROAM 1.x reports a speed increase of X and ROAM 1.y reports a speed increase of Y, it would be wrong to say that ROAM 1.y makes your Mac faster than ROAM 1.x did.

New in this version:
• The GUI uses the terms Activate and Deactivate in reference to turning ROAM on and off (instead of Install/Uninstall).
• ROAM deactivates itself when running under the MacOS 10 Classic.app environment. This means you can leave ROAM installed on your normal MacOS 9.x.x boot disk instead of disabling ROAM when booting MacOS 10's Classic.app.
• The installer notifies the user that ROAM is not meant for MacOS 10.
• Bugs in Load/Unload (which affected the Deactivate button) were fixed.

System requirements:
• System 7.5 to 9.04
• ROAM is MacOS 9.0.4 compatible. (Past versions have been backward compatible to MacOS 8.0
• ROAM is coded to work back to MacOS 7.5 though even though this has not been tested.)
• ROAM requires 8MB of RAM.
• ROAM works with RAM Doubler 8 and RAM Doubler 9.
• ROAM works with Speed Doubler.
• ROAM works with Symantec's Norton Utilities' Disk Light when you use Disk Light v5.0. Disk Light v4.0 has problems with ROAM.
• ROAM has problems with FWB CDT. See the FAQ for more info. This is CDT's fault, not ROAM's.

Known Bugs:
• ROAM 1.6b6 and newer (MacsBug 6.6 + MacOS 9.0): writing to the write protected ROM Image does not cause a freeze. However, some VERY poorly written applications seem to be out there that are writting to the ROM Image. I'm working on code to "ignore" writes to the ROM Image.
• ROAM 1.6b6 and newer (MacsBug 6.6 + MacOS 9.0): writing to the ROM does not cause a freeze.
• ROAM older than 1.6b6: writing to the write protected ROM Image might cause a FREEZE.
• ROAM older than 1.6b6: writing to the ROM might cause a FREEZE.

Successful ROAM running machines:
• Most NuBus PowerMacs
• All beige non-NewWorld PowerMacs.
• NuBus/PCI class PowerPC based Powerbooks.
• Most G3/G4 upgrade cards and processor upgrades.
• Beige G3 266MHz
• Beige G3 w/IBM Copper 450 MHz ZIF upgrade.
• 8500 w/XLR8 ZIF Carrier 1.0 & G3/266.

Machines ROAM does not work on (or not well on):
• iMacs (comes with ROM in RAM functionality)
• Blue & White G3s (comes with ROM in RAM functionality)
• 6100/66 Macs. It is possible that they would benefit _IF_ the system bus speed was increased. It seems like the ROM DIMM is faster than RAM on these machines.
• 7200's.
• PowerPC upgraded 680x0 Macs
