10.3.8 Notes & Tips
Paul Baily
I've a 15" PowerBook FW 800 (AlBook) that I noticed was recently oversensitive with its ambient light sensors, particularly the one under the left speaker grille. In fact it was downright jittery! Waving a hand briefly over it was now causing the screen to immediately step down brightness then back up again, not to mention flickering from any slight change in ambient light. Additionally, the console was reporting each brightness change, e.g.:
Feb 19 20:17:11 localhost kernel: AppleLMUController: setLEDBrightness
- Brightness level requested at: 0x00000808.
Feb 19 20:17:11 localhost kernel: AppleLMUController:
kbdFadeTimerAction.
[...]
In short it was maddening! After reading some forums I learned that others were experiencing the same symptoms, the common factor being the 10.3.8 update. It was a relief to think that it wasn't a hardware problem but instead was almost like the 10.3.8 update installed a caffeine-fuelled monkey constantly tapping the brightness up/down keys under certain light conditions (or maybe because it just liked tapping buttons...)
Some have suggested just disabling the auto brightness function, and while this does stop the flickering, it means you have to go without a major feature that makes these PowerBooks so nice to use. Having taken the ambient light sensors for granted for so long, it's jarring to put the 'Book to sleep in an office, then wake it up in a much dimmer home environment and be bathed in full intensity backlight.
Taking a look at the 10.3.8 update with Pacifist shows that the AppleLMUController kernel extension (the one leaving all the messages in the system log) was indeed updated with 10.3.8 (both delta and combined.)
I took a leap, backed up the 10.3.8 version of AppleLMUController.kext and, using Pacifist, reinstalled the copy from the original install CD that came with my PowerBook. I'm happy to say that as far as I can tell, this has restored the ambient light sensors to their non-jittery, serene selves with no ill-effect.
Hope this is of use to your readers, or at least another data point."
Bei mir hats wunderbar geholfen ... alles beim alten.
Gruß und viel Spaß beim hacken,
