hallo.

firewire Kabel schon mal getauscht?

http://www.mactalk.com.au/28/71225-need-firewire-800-hub.html

I recently bought one of those NitroAV FW 800 hubs on eBay that Mc Cool links to and it is great.
I couldn't buy one locally and most of the companies in the US that had them wouldn't ship to Australia so I had to go the ebay route which was better as it only cost me $50 ( brand newie too ) as opposed to $154 plus postage.

So, if you buy that hub you can just buy either a dongle for the FW800 to FW400 or buy a FW400 to FW800 cable. Non apple stores/resellers would likely call these adaptors '8 pin to 6 pin'..
9 pin to 6pin ICarl.

Can't you daisy chain Firewire? If the 800 HDD has two ports like the WD Studio HDD you could plug a firewire 400 hub into the back of it. I don't think I have ever seen an 800 hub but I know I have a 400 hub somewhere here.

Be aware though that not all enclosure manufacturers adhere to the strict guidelines for Firewire.
While most good makers will put out boxes that allow daisychaining with no problems some will cause hassles if chained in a particular order.
A hub is definitely the best way to go.

Mark James [SoftRAID]
FireWire hub implementations leave a lot to be desired. Using hubs can eventually lead to serious data corruption problems. You may get away with using one for a while, but it is like sleeping with a Scorpion.
Problems are more likely with intensive I/O useage such as on a RAID volume, where excessive signal to noise ratios can lead to hundreds of bus resets per minute and corrupted packets.
The result can be data corruption, or in some cases, the loss of the entire volume from damage to the volume header.
Readers should stay away from FireWire hubs and purchase FireWire PCI cards.
A separate FireWire bus gives much higher performance, in addition.

....

3) there are Firewire *ports* and Firewire *busses* and, as far as I know, on Apple products all the ports go to the same bus. That is why data rates are affected. Purchasing a FW PCI card creates a new bus.
4) Firewire units use an internal identifier, similar to a GUID. Some manufacturers however, use the same identifier in each unit in a model line. This causes chaos, since the two have the same destination "address."

.....
I've found that sometimes you can't daisy chain even if the middle device is powered up. I have a NewerTech drive dock that I got from OWC and even though it has two FW800 ports I've never been able to get any downstream device to work. I've tried a FW800 card reader and a Lacie rugged HD. I thought this was a malfunction and even returned the first one I had for a replacement which behaves exactly the same way. It's been a disappointment because one of the main reasons I got it was to have the ability to daisy chain FW800 devices off of it.

........

Thanks to Ray Stroud for the kind words.
As for why the "leave the Mac unpowered for several minutes to reset the FireWire ports":
It depends on the Mac model specifically. But in general, here is what Apple has done over the years:

- when shutdown, some Macs still provide power to the FireWire interface to permit repeating to work properly with other connected devices
- when shutdown, certain Macs still provide bus power to permit the charging of connected iPods, or to prevent the connected iPods from discharging. Older iPods, of course since the current models can only be charged via USB.
- for laptops, some Macs still draw power from the battery to take care of the above two actions; i.e. like a desktop still connected to AC power while shutdown. So be sure to remove the battery when trying this tip.
- some Macs, while sleeping, continue to provide bus power and/or permit the FireWire interface to support repeating for other connected devices
- some Macs can deliver 6 watts of power to a connected device; some can deliver 15 watts or more to a connected device. Some Macs supply power to the ports independently; some share the power between the two or more ports on the Mac. Close examination of Apple's specs can help to discern which models deliver the most power. The one thing you can count on is that at least 6 watts are available. The actual voltage level provided also varies.
- for all Macs with multiple FireWire ports delivered to date, they all share the same FireWire bus. The various ports use the lone FireWire controller in that Mac. Some video and audio apps and devices get confused when multiple FireWire devices are all connected to the built-in ports. To correct the issues, installing a separate FireWire interface card (PCI, PCIx, PCIe, CardBus, or PCI-Express as appropriate) will usually correct the issue by creating an additional, independent FireWire bus. Unfortunately, these cards also have their own unique ways of dealing with sleeping and shutdown situations.
So... there is no one answer that can clearly define what a particular Mac will deliver with its FireWire port.
One thing that does seem to be true and worth a shot when having FireWire issues is to shutdown and disconnect all power and interface cables for a few minutes. This will usually reset the ports, and restore proper operation. This sort of explains why some users report that their Macs mysteriously start working when brought into the Genius Bar at the Apple stores - the power and interface cables are removed for transport.
This also explains why some repair centers report "no problem found" when a product is sent in for repair.
I have heard from many users who have tried the tip, and reported success. (It's also spelled out in several Apple Tech Notes, such as:
..........

https://web.archive.org/web/2010021...tech.com/whitepapers/FireWirePortFailures.php

5.3.1 REPAIR THE MACHINE
If the user has a computer under warranty, it is likely that the manufacturer will repair the damaged port without charge of any kind. It may be worthwhile checking with the manufacturer, even if the computer is out of warranty.

5.3.2 ADD AN INEXPENSIVE FIREWIRE HOST CARD

If the machine is out of warranty and has available PCI slots, the simplest way to repair the computer is to add a FireWire PCI card. They are inexpensive and very easy to install. Most operating systems do not require the installation of any additional software drives to support FireWire usage through a PCI card.

6. CONCLUSIONS

Most of the failure modes of FireWire ports are believed to be caused by low quality or worn out FireWire cables, operator error during device and cable insertion, inadequate PHY port protection, and improper design of external FireWire devices which causes voltage surges to the host port.

Apparently you don't understand the concept of bandwidth. The idea of "slowing down bandwidth" as you state is a non-sequiter. Bandwidth is a constant. Bandwidth has nothing to do with speed but rather refers to data capacity at given slice of time. To use an analogy of water and pipes: bandwidth refers to the pipe diameter, while throughput refers to speed/pressure of water flow. Throughput changes depending on the performance of the I/O device doing the operations (i.e. reading and writing, where writing is more complicated and always a slower throughput - especially if one of the devices has RAID).

So, FW 800 has a theoretical maximum throughput of 786 megabits per second (or about 100 megabytes/second). That means if you have 3 drives each of them get a slice of the 800mbps not each one gets 800mpbs. So if you are watching a video on one and lets say the transfer rate is 50mbps (like an HDV video stream) your other two devices need to split the remaining 50mpbs between them. If all 3 drives are needing anything more than 33mpbs, well then someone loses. You've saturated your bandwidth.

Point is, your test of removing the Kramer proved absolutely nothing since the entire 800mbps was allotted to the single drive. The NitroAV won't solve the problem either if the data you need to flow through your drives/devices exceeds the bandwidth of 800mbps. All a hub does is give you more ports, and hence more points to disconnect from without having to take other devices out of the data path. It is NOT a switch, which intelligently routes the data from device to controller bypassing all the other devices in the chain. FW is by design a daisy chained architecture and the hubs do the magic of internally managing the daisy chain so you don't have physical cables to swap about. What's worse is if any of your devices are FW400, the entire bus bandwidth for every device will be cut in half to FW400.

Hope this helps, and I encourage you to change your review from a 1 to something else since it appears the problem was in your expectation of the product and not the product itself.

dann hatte ich kontakt mit lindy:

Sehr geehrter Herr Tokahoma,

Sehr geehter Herr tokahoma,

http://www.partsdata.de/firewirekab...polig-ieee1394a-produktion-eingestellt?c=2340
