Hello Charles, upgrade differs only from licensing side. Upgrade key will not activate installation without previous version key. On the other hand, full key does not require previous key for activation.
We recommend the following steps to make your upgrade proceed as smoothly as possible:
1. Launch your virtual machine in its current version of Parallels Desktop (5);
2. Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs (Software and Features --> Software in case of Windows Vista and 7) and remove the following items:
* Parallels Tools.
* Your current virus protection tool (KIS, McAfee, Norton, etc.).
NOTE: You can reinstall your virus protection tool immediately after the upgrade is completed. If you had a third party antivirus program previously installed, we suggest that you replace it with Kaspersky Internet Security; Bundled with Parallels Desktop, Kaspersky Internet Security is made to work perfectly in a virtual environment.You can install it by clicking on the Install Kaspersky Internet Security menu item in the Virtual Machine menu in Mac menu bar.
3. Shutdown Windows (do not suspend it), then quit Parallels Desktop.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for any other virtual machines you have.
5. Download the Parallels Desktop 7 installation package, start the installation and complete the upgrade.
Your previous version of Parallels Desktop will be replaced automatically. After the installation is complete, you can start your virtual machine(s) and they will be automatically upgraded to run with Parallels Desktop 7. In some cases you should wait until it converts to the new format, if necessary.
