Standby....
@ralfsy:
Latest plugin lets you fry eggs on Apple TV
April 1st, 2007 by probono
Only hours after a tutorial on creating plugins (also known as “FRApplicances”) for the Apple TV became available on AwkwardTV, hackers all over the world started writing extensions to turn the $299 device into something even more awesome than it is out of the box. An unknown contributor has now submitted what is the most unusual hack for the Apple TV to date: “Stove.frappliance“, a plugin that effectively turns the Apple TV into a heating device capable of rewarming dishes, keeping coffee hot or even frying eggs (for the really adventurous).
The software, which is currently in private beta testing to ensure that no irreversible damage is done to the hardware, essentially achieves this by doing three things:
Generates 100% CPU and GPU load by running a processor- and graphics-intensive infinite loop
Reverts underclocked system bus from 350 MHz to 533 MHz
Controls internal fan to run at 1200 rpm instead of the default 4800 rpm
The picture above is an illustration only - no one wanted to do the real mess. But infrared measurements show that Stove.frappliance can indeed produce up to 65.03C (149.92F), which is sufficient to fry eggs, compared to 44.27C (111.68F), the maximum achieved without the plugin.
Cautious users now wonder whether the use of desktop Mac software on the Apple TV might unintentionally have the same effect, especially when running applications that produce high CPU and GPU loads and using an application that reduces the speed of the internal fan at the same time.
Stove.frappliance will be offered for download (with complete source code) once it can reasonably be affirmed that it doesn’t permanently damage hardware.
